Architectural Design

What is the style of the building?

Architectural design is a discipline that focuses on covering and meeting the needs and demands of people in order to create living spaces through the use of specific tools and, most importantly, creativity. Despite the widespread belief that architecture is solely a technological endeavor, the goal is to combine the technological and the aesthetic.

In the same way, it combines design, which is defined as the creative process, with architecture, which is defined as the creation and presentation of technical solutions. Architectural design seeks the values and formal qualities of the works through spatial experiences by combining both disciplines. We generally associate it with project drawings, sketches, or outlines, and it is one of its fundamental foundations. There are also other factors involved in this aspect of architectural design, such as geometry, space, or aesthetics, among others. After all, architecture, and thus architectural design, is comprised of numerous elements and processes.

Architectural design types and examples

Of course, architecture encompasses a wide range of specializations. We must not only keep the constructive part, but also consider other branches that contribute to the completion of the project. In general, knowing what the space will be used for is the foundation of architectural design, but aesthetic considerations also play a role. This means that categorising architectural design is difficult, and that some categories may be infinite: we can categorise architectural design according to its use, its intention, its aesthetics, its technical aspects…

For the same reason, the number of architectural design examples could be infinite, especially given the fact that trends change frequently and are influenced by a variety of factors. In this case, we can discuss some modern architecture and design trends that have influenced the work of many architects and designers. We can see this mirrored in some parts if we think of design as a conceptual representation. For example, diaphanous spaces, concrete geometric forms, utilitarian spaces, or a unique manner of utilising volumes can all be found in buildings. We can use biophilic design as an example to explain this concept and provide examples. What exactly is it? It’s a building trend that combines architecture and nature by incorporating natural elements into the construction of structures. The goal is to detach from metropolitan settings by incorporating natural elements into the structures themselves. As a result, the biophilic design example highlights three key points: connecting with nature through sensory stimulation, evoking the presence of nature through copying of shapes, and creating spaces that indicate a sense of quiet and relaxation.

This style of architectural design has already been adopted in several areas, such as Australia’s Royal Children’s Hospital and New York’s High Line Park. These are two excellent examples of biophilic architecture design, which not only achieves the goal of rest or disconnection from the urban environment, but also, in some cases, aids in the improvement of patient health (in the hospital) or the reduction of temperature (in the case of the park in New York). Other types of design, such as minimalist, modernist, Victorian, classic, avant-garde, or American, could be used in the same way as this example.

As a result, architectural design is necessary to provide a foundation for a final architectural construction, as it considers various aspects of space usability that would be difficult to comprehend in a technical manner, while also incorporating the creative aspect into the process.
